Question: Oh no, a transgender issue?
(Posted by: Tokio on 2010-02-01 15:01:21)
I've recently come out as transgendered. Well, came out to myself anyway. I have friends that I've been discussing it with and I was telling them I might be. I've been having trouble with trying to find a new name. I don't like ordinary names like Joe, Fred, John, etc. I want something more out of the ordinary, but don't know where to look. Are there books that are full of names to look at? Websites? And, if anyone answering is transgendered, how did you know that your new name was the perfect one. Advice would be greatly appreciated :) Oh, I forgot to tell you that I was born female (because I see someone commented with female names.) Sorry! |

I think Beatrice or Gertrude would be nice. |

Personally, I'd choose the name of a character from a book/ film/ poem/ song I loved or really connected with. That way it really means something, you know? |

This is kind of empty, maybe. When I'm writing a book and need names I take the white pages and get it from there. There are tons of names in it, some ordinary some unusual. |

Run a search for names of the gender your looking for, for a guy I like Lucifer and for a girl I like Lilith. |

A lot of trans people choose a name somewhat similar to their birth name, or starting with the same letter. You could start there or if you want something totally different from the name your parents gave you then check like babynames.com Declan Skylar Fin (or Finnigan) umm... |

I would check name books... maybe baby name books... It's really interesting to see what each name means, which is more popular and more interesting. They give you the origin and meaning of each name. Did you know that your name means everything? From how people see you and how they interact with you? Just think someone who did not get along with robert when they were 10 might see another robert and completely stay away from them. Check out the latest baby name survey book... this book is based on surveys of what people see when they hear a certain name. It's really interesting. Also find the "Hot Numbers " book by Jean Simpson... it's pretty old but give you another perspective on what i'm talking about. |

You don't choose your name. It chooses you. Sounds funny but its true. When you hear the right one it will stick. I went thru a bunch of them. they never fit. Too girly, too frilly, too mannish, Jillian was perfect and it never let me go. Jill is what my friends like for short and fits like I was born with it. And I was. |

One person already said that when you find your name you will know it. She is right. But going through baby name books or sites will give your subconscious something to work on. Here are a couple of sites to get you started. Google "baby names " or similar phrases to turn up dozens more name sites. Good luck with your transition. |

I chose the closest female name to my Father's name, Richard. I also happened to like the name Erica, and I don't know anyone else in my life with this name. |

I asked my Mom what she would have named me. I had a choice between Paula and Mary. You can do a search of the most popular baby names for the year you were born. That may give you some ideas. You will know when you find it. |
